Top 6 Japanese Street Food Near Narita Airport

1. Hayashida no Osenbei

Hashiya No Osenbei is the oldest rice cracker shop at Narita. In addition, it is the only place that makes rice cracker from scratch. You can choose from soy sauce, negi miso, and Mitarashi and here we got negi miso.

Different types of rice crackers

Kushi Sen (Negi Miso) ¥200 $1.82

This rice cracker is on the stick and they make this by dipping into miso and this one has green onions sprinkled on top. The flavor is very deep from the senbei dipped into the miso and it has the nice sweetness from the miso as well. The normal senbeis that are sold are just crispy but the ones here have a little bit of the sogginess as it is dipped into the miso. The rice cracker itself is actually very sticky, so it was nice how it is on the stick.

A person making the Japanese Pancake

This place has been a Naritasan staple for the past 7 years and so we know that it is a beloved place by tourists.

The outside, which is like pancakes smells like a pancake and is very moist in the inside. This one here was just freshly made!

Shiroan ¥150 $1.37

The first bite had a subtle sweetness but after eating more and more the sweetness increases from the white bean paste. The paste is more of Tsubuan, where there are some beans here and there in the paste. The contrast of the creamy paste and the hard and crispy outside is very interesting.

3. Kawatoyo

Kawatoyo is an Unagi or eel restaurant. One thing that differs this store from other Unagi restaurants is that you can watch the chef prepare the dish right in front of you. This store has been around for a very long time and has been open since 1910.

The cook dipping cooked Unagi into the sauce

Here at Narita, Unagi is one of the specialties where you can catch them at Lake Inaba-numa and Tone River and both places are very close by.

Jo Unagi ¥3600 $33.05

When you take off the lid from the Unagi Box, you immediately can smell the sauce that is drenched with the Unagi but also the charcoal burned smell from grilling. The Unagi looks like it is on the rice bed! The texture of the Unagi is very tender and soft and the Umami flavor from the sauce is perfect. You can sprinkle some Sansho pepper on top to add a bit of spice when eating the eel as well. It is definitely worth going here!

Share’s Kitchen has many Chiba Prefecture specialties.

Fluffy Shaved Ice (Matcha) ¥350 $3.20

Here we got the Matcha Shaved Ice. As you can see, the shaved ice is very fluffy almost like a cloud!

When you take a bite, you can feel the soft texture of the shaved ice. The Matcha is actually a bit on the bitter side, but the after, you can get a bit of the sweetness from the condensed milk. Since it was so hot outside, the ice melted a bit. But, it was really nice that you can still feel the soft shaved ice even though it was a bit melted. This is perfect for the summer!
