1. Yakitori Honpo Hamakei

At Yakitori Honpo Hamakei, you can do a take out and you can find the shop outside of Daruma Ichiba Market. They sell 100 different types of Japan made chicken but also Menchikatsu.

Juku Menchi-¥140 $1.27

The Juku Menchi is a crispy panko outer layer with juicy meat juice from ground beef and pork mix. The flavor is not only from the meat but also the minced onions. Here we tried only the Menchikatsu but you can also try their Yakitori as well!

Watanabe Sengyo can be found behind the vegetable shop and butcher. Here, they sell fresh fish and here you can see that we got a Moriyawa set which has Chutoro (Tuna) and Hamachi. We are trying Sashimi that they got in the morning! The Sashimi is glistening and can see how fresh it is. You can eat it with soy sauce and Wasabi. You can make your own Sashimi dish by choosing your favorite Sashimi and make it into a rice bowl as well.

Sakura Mochi- ¥130 $1.18

Shugetsudo has been in business for over 70 years and sells both sweets and rice dishes such as Inarizushi and onigiri. The shop owner recommended Kusa Mochi and Sakura Mochi because they are both seasonal and perfect for spring. Here we are trying Sakura Mochi which was just made. It has sweet and pink colored mochi with red bean paste, wrapped in Sakura leaf. You can smell the cherry blossom and reminds us of the arrival of spring.

Coffee beans before being roasted

Yanaka Coffee is a small coffee roastery at Happy Road Oyama. With hot coffee, you can choose your coffee beans and they will freshly roast it right in front of you! Here we got Café au Lait or Milk Coffee, where you can taste the blend of different coffee beans. The smell of the roasted beans makes you feel like at home. The shop is not in the main streets but you can get some rest from all the walking.

5. Funachu Oyama

Various Yakitori and other fried food

From the left, Nankotsu, Negima, Piman no Nikuzume,

Funachu Oyama is a Yakitori Chain and originated in Asakusa. This shop also has a long history and opened their business after the war. They first were focusing on eel and river fish, but since they are both seasonal and can only be caught in the winter, they switched to Yakitori. Today, we ordered Negima, Piman no niku zume, and Nankotsu. Negima has chicken breast and scallions, Piman no niku zume is stuffed green bell pepper, and Nankotsu is chicken cartilage. They all taste amazing, especially with chicken cartilage with an interesting crunchy texture.

6. Bakery & Cafe MaRuju

General atmosphere of the bakery

Top 5 Bread in the Bakery: 1- Salt Butter Roll ¥115 2- Maruju Curry Pan ¥165 3- Beef Fillet Katsu Sandwich ¥506 4- Teppan Pizza ¥230 5- Melty Fluffy Cream pan ¥160 (all prices without tax)

Next we are trying Curry Pan from Bakery & Cafe Maruju. It is the second popular bread from the bakery but we chose this because it is a bit special, where they top with cream cheese. The Curry Pan is crispy on the outside from deep frying the bread and has a smooth curry with some beef. It is worth trying as curry pan is a type of Japanese bread and comfort food. When you take a bite, you can get different textures and feel like you are in heaven.

7. Ikkon

Meat Sashi- three different intestines: Senmai, Gatsu, and Kobukuro

Meat Sashi Dipped in Sumiso

At You-za Oyama, which you can go to by crossing the train tracks you can try interesting new food. Beer is something that get along with the food as well. We are going to try something new, intestines at Ikkon.

The dish has three different intestines, Senmai, Gatsu, and Kobukuro. Senmai is a leaf tribe, Gatsu is pork stomach, and Kobukuro, the womb. The meat is just boiled, so you can try with two different sauces: sesame oil with ground salt, Sumiso (vinegar, sugar and miso mix). The texture is very chewy and goes well especially with the Sumiso. We will finish up by eating Karaage. This one has red ginger flakes and you can also dip in mayonnaise. The spicy Benishoga goes well with the creamy mayonnaise.
